The other night, while looking for something to do between snacks, we stumbled upon the David Lynch version of Dune, and settled in to watch the movie. I had not seen it before, but Bald Beard Food Guy and Other Dogs Mom Lady said it was good so I settled down and prepared to pretend to fall asleep and snore so loud they would keep having to turn up the volume (one of my favorite activities)! Imagine my surprise when I realized this was a movie about Space Pug! I missed some of the beginning, I had some licking to do, but as soon as I realized what it was about I settled down to watch it! What a glorious movie! It lasted for a long time, at LEAST 4 years, but I was hooked and awestruck.
I want to warn you, spoilers ahead.
So the movie opens with a lot of Game of Thrones style intrigue, revolving around the need for better spice, apparently a vital component to the galactic economy, and flavoring for the hero. The film builds slowly, but eventually, Space Pug begins her journey, by traveling with an entourage to a far off planet.
Our hero has assembled a crafty team: Curly Haired Guy to carry her in public, Young Long Haired Guy to guard her, and Pretty Haired Woman to make sure that there are enough treats. This intrepid team and their forces are fighting with cat lovers over the spice flavorings that rightfully belong to pugs. So Space Pug leads her people onto a ship, and navigates the stars with aplomb…
Navigating is serious business, and nobody is more serious than a pug.
When space Pug lands on the new planet, she is treated with love and adoration, as is her lot. She tours the planet, and directs her people to institute policies for the common human, that make her popular. In this stunning scene, she surveys her new territory, and immediately sees where improvements can be made.
Nothing escapes her keen eyes, and she directs curly haired person to focus on the people not machines. Here she beautifully portrays the majesty of her noble mission, giving the order that eventually causes her downfall.
You can see how Pretty Haired Woman is worried about the implications, but Young Long Haired Guy sees the importance of her cause, and is inspired by her vision and iron will.
But all is not well in the new land. You see, the previous rulers are cat lovers, as previously mentioned, and they hatch a plot to take back the planet. They plot and carry out a sneak attack, (as cats do), killing curly haired person in the process. Fortunately, Space Pug has the services of a British Starfleet Commander, who fights through overwhelming odds and brings Space Pug to her secret base, where she begins to help Young Long Haired Guy and Pretty Haired Woman train a new army.
Fun piece of trivia, this scene is so inspiring, and emotional, it serves as the basis of the most popular merchandise for the movie. Over 95% of the profits the movie made came from the sales of these action statues!
In this scene, the cats are shown directing rock musicians to torture people who like country music, to get information on were Space Pug is hiding, but the plan ultimately fails.
Space Pug directs a final battle, directing her forces with a tactical plan that overwhelms the might of the empire in a frankly anti climatic battle. There should have been more attention given to her brilliant planning, but frankly, I doubt most people would have understood what they were seeing, so I can understand why it was left out.
The movie draws to a close as the final plot points are sewn up, and Space Pug forces the ruler of the galaxy to abdicate and turn over power to her. In a final scene, she is shown with new humans serving her, as she allows Young Long Haired Guy and Pretty Haired Woman (who went bald from the stress of keeping track of all the snacks needed) to retire and live in peace.
All in all, I have to say this movie is one of the best ever made, and it’s sequels, Space Pug and the Men In Black is one of the better cinematic universes out there. I highly recommend you take the time to watch them.
